The fictional future universe of the Warhammer 40k franchises is a dark and dangerous place where humanity, led by a willfully ignorant and belligerent theocratic bureaucracy, struggles to survive against all manner of threats from within and without.

So what do the people of the imaginary 41st Millennium think of homosexuality? An important question, and one brought up in this thread from Black Industries’ official 40k RPG forum.

“Sergeant Brother” gets things rolling with a request for suggestions regarding something another game master would have handled in-group:

And it made me wonder about how sex is viewed generally within the Imperium. I kinda get the impression that many professions within the Imperium are a kind of cleric who would seem to be celibate. It seems like both the Cleric and Tech Priests would be chaste and celibate, though I haven’t seen any specific mention of anything like that. I kinda feel like psykers might be too, or at least encouraged not to have sex or romantic relationships - and the player who asked me about homosexuality is playing a psyker character.

Does anybody know about any fluff sources that address the issue of sex, love, and romance in the Imperium or have any theories or feelings on what is typically expected from different careers in this regard?

…and surprisingly enough, the discussion begins rather reasonably with members attempting to extrapolate answers from two decades’ worth of contradictory officially published material. Not that there aren’t occasional hints of things to come.

“grimsnagga” evokes the Lord of Pleasure:

All of that said, and agreed with, let’s not forget dear ol’ Slaanesh, the chaos-god of BDSM. On the one hand, I think the Imperium’s approach to sexuality in general would vary depending on the culture of the world you’re on. On the other hand, wandering into the murkier side of alternative lifestyles definately runs the risk of entering into the realm of the Prince of Chaos. Therefore, I would expect behaviors of that nature would be strictly condemned and preached against.

..while “Monomachy” issues an all-caps mandate:

AS CITIZENS OF THE IMPERIUM IT IS YOUR COLLECTIVE DUTY TO REPRODUCE AND ENSURE ITS CONTINUATION.

…and “Luddite” offers an itinerary for an Imperium sex cruise:

In reality (real world)’ sexual norms are culturally derived and i see no reason why there wouldn’t be a similar disprate set of attitudes across the worlds of the Imperium.

Victori IV - heavily influenced by the Ecclesiarchy and a rigid morailty, any sex other than ‘married for procreation’ is seen as ‘dirty’ and criminalised.

Attica Primas - amod the columns and agoras, homosexuality and pederasty are the sexual norms.

Neo Jorvik - sexual promiscuity and personal choice are the norms with all forms accepted.

Drudge’s World - everyone works too hard to even consider sex…except during winter when the ‘baby-making season’ ensues as the fields cannot be tilled and there’s nothing else to do.

Xinxiang - You must have a license to commit sex…

Lolitas - consenting age is puberty, and sexual pairing is made by parent councils, with the first couplings being openly before the council…

Bonobos - the sex between all sexes is used as social bonding…

The options are entire yours to define…

Then “Heretek” decides to let the Nazis out of the bag…

True enough but after reading a particularly ignorant post I just thought I’d have my 2 cents heard… As for gays and fascist regimes… I don’t think personally it would have been an issue.. look at the ancient greeks for one, as long as you were doing your duty (which included breeding) no one cared… The Nazis were also particularly lenient when it came to this for the most part… I could suggest a few good books on it, Hitlers actual sexual preference is also an open question… so as far as being “Gay” or otherwise in a quasi fascist order can be handled what difference does it really make? there is no canon nor most likely will there will there ever be any.. Unless we get Hotties of the Soritas pin up girl calanders and Hunks of the Black Templar’s playgirl edition…lol… I mean really it just ends up being what ever one wants it to be and it should stay there.

…and just so no one gets the wrong idea, he has read books…lots of them:

I’m not ignorant to the facts, to the contrary I’ve done a considerable amount of reading and research on the subject of the sexual politics and fascism, the ideas I’ve read expressed on fascism, in this forum in general is a Anglo demonization of the fascist movement, it’s not 1942 anymore please stop with the wartime propaganda that has already been disproved… anyway I’m not responding to this anymore since it’s a history lesson nor am I implying that fascists are nice people, nor denying the holocaust or that the gay movement and Nazism had anything to do with one another except that individuals who were gay were both involved and prospered in fascist states…

It’s a shame the moderators temp-banned him after that, I had the feeling he was just getting warmed up…

Wake up, America

by Ted Grant

A Christian fundamentalist photographer falls afoul of New Mexico’s anti-discrimination law.

Free Republic commentators respond:

The ‘gay rights’ movement is as big if not a bigger threat to America and Americans than the abortion movement.

I have often made the claim that the fabled “lunch counter sit-ins” from the 1950’s which helped push forward the Civil Rights struggle were a bad precedent.

Yes, but once we went down the road of proptecting minorities, then the further road of adding “sexual preference” to the minorities list, this becomes the equivalent of saying “we don’t serve blacks”.

That is how the left is destroying our culture.

Faggot fascism on the march.

This is why a legislator in Kansas recently called homosexual agenda “alqueera”! They sure act like it (a lot more than the Christians they accuse of doing so).

Another example of unequal protection due to anti-discrimination laws. A hetero couple has no recourse to sue this photographer for refusing to photograph their event, but a gay couple can. Looking for someone to punch, I’m best to choose the straight guy because I get more time for hitting the gay guy.

The lesbos are suffering from Christophobia.

The law permits people to discriminate against Republicans in lodging and employment. It even didn’t permit additional charges when there was violence and vandalism targeted at families because they were Republican.

Wikipedia, the on-line encyclopedia as accurate as asking Jimmy down at Hootch’s Bar for his expert opinion, isn’t the first place you’d expect to find raging debates over trivial matters…okay, no, it is exactly the place you’d expect to find pointless arguements. But some people’s devotion to refusing to acknowledge the obvious is downright touching.

Take the debate over whether or not the character of Jim Dangle on Reno 911! is meant to be gay or not:

Dangle’s orientation is never made clear, for a reason: it’s a running gag. To say outright that he is gay is simply wrong

The ongoing joke in the show is that he never reveals if he is or is not gay, hence it is ambiguous.

It never says that shw wanted the divorce because he was gay, and certainly was not flirting with the new husband. The joke of the scene is that they got along, despite the odd circumstances.

I suggest we fix the article. Dangle isn’t outright homosexual, and that’s the whole point.

Seems to me like Dangle is gay but he’s reluctant to admit it, possibly fearing the inevitable retribution he’d get from the rest of the cops. He tries to seduce Trudy thinking he’d never see her again and that she was infatuated with him.

The fact that he’s had a history with women yet behaves in a homosexual manner makes the viewer unsure of his sexuality, and that’s the entire point of it. He never openly has had a relationship or any sexual activity with a man, but he was married at one point. Even T.V. Guide’s show description refers to him as being sexually ambiguous.

It’s also important to keep in mind that the actors aren’t always as knowledgable of the characters they play as the creators are. Just because Thomas Lennon says Dangle is gay doesn’t mean the creators intend for Dangle to be an outright homosexual.

You’re making too hasty a conclusion without really thinking. Your “evidence” is based mainly on his outward behavior, which means that obviously you don’t know the definition of homosexual. Anything that points to him being gay and attempting to cover it up could also point to him being straight and attempting to appear gay.

As already mention, Lennon may play the part as gay but the show certainly makes it ambiguous. I also think that T.V. Guide holds enough weight to balance Lennon’s reference to him as being gay.

The fact that it came from The Advocate gives it less weight. Think for a moment: they’re discussing a character who is “ostensibly” (I think that that word sums up what all the reviews and insightful viewers of the show have arrived to) gay for a gay magazine.

So, to review: we can not describe a character clearly coded as gay, who displays an obvious attraction to other men, who participated in a gay marriage, whose creator explictly describes as gay because TV Guide said otherwise once. Gotcha.
