The tax-filing deadline is fast approaching, and gay couples face a particularly unique hurdle, what with the patchwork of state and federal laws regarding gay marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships. A good tax preparer is essential. Which is why it was so surprising when one couple discovered that the at-home, on-line tax prep software from H&R Block doesn’t support a joint tax return function for civil unions in Connecticut, a state where such unions are legal and those in them can file joint state returns.

Let’s see how the commentators at The Consumerist took that news, shall we?

You know, for a site allegedly devoted to detailing consumer rights issues, the readership seems to side with corporations an awful lot of the time…

Oh, shut up. Fact is, this is the first time in our nation’s history that our government has legislated protection for a behavior. If homosexuals didn’t advertise their sexual tastes, they wouldn’t need legislative protections. I don’t walk, talk, and dress in a manner that screams, “Overweight women with big floppy breasts get me off.” That would be inappropriate. Equally inappropriate are flaming gay men who act like little girls to ensure everyone around them knows exactly how they like to take it in bed, and I take great offense to being told by my government that I have to pretend this is acceptable. It isn’t.

Look, I don’t care if gay people want to live together and be gay together. More power to them, this is a free country. I do mind being forced to financially support their homosexuality in the form of benefits for “partners.” I’m not saying they can’t be gay, just saying I want nothing to do with it.

Yes, God forbid you have to be reminded who a gay man is sleeping with. As opposed to the exhaustive coverage the media devotes to which famous straight person is sleeping with who.

Of course, you had to bring race into this. You people always do and it’s clear what you’re doing – trying to paint me as a racist bigot since you can’t win your argument without attacking my character. The comparison is invalid, and I’ll tell you why: A black man can’t help that his skin is black. Anyone who sees him will immediately know he is black and there’s nothing fair he can do about that (clearly asking black people to bleach their skin is barbaric).

A gay man, on the other hand, can very well help his behavior in public. He does not need to behave in a manner that informs everyone what type of sex he likes and it’s perfectly fair for others to ask him not to advertise what turns him on. This is what I, and for that matter most of the rest of the American population, find offensive. The stereotypical homosexual behaviors – limp wrist, dressing outrageously, giggling like a schoolgirl, etc – can be controlled and we should not have discrimination laws that protect these controllable behaviors. Note that I feel the same about heterosexuals who dress, talk and/or behave in a manner that advertises their sexual desires.

Now, I realize that not all gay people behave inappropriately. I work with and have friends who are gay and I like them all just fine. What they do behind closed doors is no more of my business than what sexual positions my wife and I use is of theirs – and that’s the key: The gays I like and respect don’t advertise their sexual desires. In fact, you’d never know they were gay until you really got to know them.

Ah, the old “I know a gay guy, and I don’t beat the crap out of him every time I see him, therefore I can’t possibly be a homophobe” arguement…

In case you’re not sick of hearing about it by now, the web-site Stuff White People Like (though, really, it should probably be named Stuff Upper Middle Class College Educated White Liberals Who Live on the East Coast Like) frequently features down-right cringe-inducing stereotypes. And yet, the comments are usually worse…Take a recent post about how white people like having gay friends…(that sound you hear is every gay man in America laughing derisively at this notion):

I am not homophobic by any means, I just don’t have enough in common with gay people develop a friendship. You take it up the ass. I don’t. End of story.

Dudes don’t like being hit on by other dudes. OK, I realize turning a straight boy is the ultimate gay fantasy, but back the hell off. Also, there is no such thing as bi-curiosity with dudes. You don’t get to try dick. Once you’ve had one in your mouth, your gay. It’s OK for chicks, though.

The Advocate recently ran a piece about Thomas Beatie, a female-to-male transsexual in Oregon who became pregnant. It’s a fascinating story that calls into question our assumptions about gender, gender identity and the evolving nature of the family in the twenty-first century.

I understand that homosexuality is not a choice, but what bothers me is transgender people who try and claim that what they did to their bodies wasn’t a choice they made, and therefore we shouldn’t judge them by it. Discriminating based on what somebody is is a terrible thing, but discriminating based on choices people make is completely fair territory.

And it’s because of people like you that we can’t get anti-discrimination laws passed…

USA Today, America’s tabloid, reports on an interview with one-time Abu Ghraib guard Lyndie England which was run in the German magazine Stern. England doesn’t appear to show much regret over her actions and in fact seems to find that the problem with Abu Ghraib wasn’t so much that American soldiers were torturing people, but that the media had the audacity to report on it.

Sadly, it seems many of her country people feel the same way…

The cowardly media responsible for this yellow journalism will never take any responsibility. I await a story on 20/20 or 48 hours or 60 minutes to determine why this stupidity was leaked irresponsibly. They should be convicted for murder.

The Abu Ghraib photos that I saw looked no different than the photos that would have been taken at any one of hundreds of US colleges on fraternity initiation Hell nights. It is completely absurd that there was any kind of response to this at all. It was purely a case of opportunistic traitorous Liberal Anarchist carping.

Abu Ghraib was just a bunch of opportunistic Liberal Anarchist carping over nothing. If you got arrested on a traffic violation in this country you’d get treated a lot rougher than the Abu Ghraib prisoners did. What’s wrong with “innocence”? I’m 40 years old, and I still strive for innocence of evil. I’d never read this book. (I’d skim if it I were on the school board or otherwise had a reason to need to read it. As a regular citizen, I don’t need to read it, and shan’t.) Years ago I picked up The Color Purple. I knew little about it except that it was considered quality literature about the black experience. Somewhere into it, I thought, Is this going where I think it’s going? (Hints of lesbian sex.) I read a little more, and it clearly was. Now, I rarely, rarely start a book and don’t finish it, even if I don’t like it. That book didn’t get finished. Why? I’m an adult, but I value my innocence.

I don’t believe that parents who take a strong stand against OR love their kids can stand by and watch . . corrupt literature, sexual training within schools, be it homosexual, bisexual, transsexual, or training kids ‘how’ to have sex can keep their kids in public school.

Even in High School there is no need for this explicit education into various forms of sex, or choices, etc.

I kinda feel like psykers might be too, or at least encouraged not to have sex or romantic relationships – and the player who asked me about homosexuality is playing a psyker character.

Does anybody know about any fluff sources that address the issue of sex, love, and romance in the Imperium or have any theories or feelings on what is typically expected from different careers in this regard?

The ‘gay rights’ movement is as big if not a bigger threat to America and Americans than the abortion movement.

I have often made the claim that the fabled “lunch counter sit-ins” from the 1950′s which helped push forward the Civil Rights struggle were a bad precedent.

Yes, but once we went down the road of proptecting minorities, then the further road of adding “sexual preference” to the minorities list, this becomes the equivalent of saying “we don’t serve blacks”.

That is how the left is destroying our culture.

This is why a legislator in Kansas recently called homosexual agenda “alqueera”! They sure act like it (a lot more than the Christians they accuse of doing so).

Another example of unequal protection due to anti-discrimination laws. A hetero couple has no recourse to sue this photographer for refusing to photograph their event, but a gay couple can. Looking for someone to punch, I’m best to choose the straight guy because I get more time for hitting the gay guy.

The law permits people to discriminate against Republicans in lodging and employment. It even didn’t permit additional charges when there was violence and vandalism targeted at families because they were Republican.

Wikipedia, the on-line encyclopedia as accurate as asking Jimmy down at Hootch’s Bar for his expert opinion, isn’t the first place you’d expect to find raging debates over trivial matters…okay, no, it is exactly the place you’d expect to find pointless arguements. But some people’s devotion to refusing to acknowledge the obvious is downright touching.

Take the debate over whether or not the character of Jim Dangle on Reno 911! is meant to be gay or not:

Dangle’s orientation is never made clear, for a reason: it’s a running gag. To say outright that he is gay is simply wrong

The ongoing joke in the show is that he never reveals if he is or is not gay, hence it is ambiguous.

It never says that shw wanted the divorce because he was gay, and certainly was not flirting with the new husband. The joke of the scene is that they got along, despite the odd circumstances.

I suggest we fix the article. Dangle isn’t outright homosexual, and that’s the whole point.

Seems to me like Dangle is gay but he’s reluctant to admit it, possibly fearing the inevitable retribution he’d get from the rest of the cops. He tries to seduce Trudy thinking he’d never see her again and that she was infatuated with him.

The fact that he’s had a history with women yet behaves in a homosexual manner makes the viewer unsure of his sexuality, and that’s the entire point of it. He never openly has had a relationship or any sexual activity with a man, but he was married at one point. Even T.V. Guide’s show description refers to him as being sexually ambiguous.

It’s also important to keep in mind that the actors aren’t always as knowledgable of the characters they play as the creators are. Just because Thomas Lennon says Dangle is gay doesn’t mean the creators intend for Dangle to be an outright homosexual.

You’re making too hasty a conclusion without really thinking. Your “evidence” is based mainly on his outward behavior, which means that obviously you don’t know the definition of homosexual. Anything that points to him being gay and attempting to cover it up could also point to him being straight and attempting to appear gay.

As already mention, Lennon may play the part as gay but the show certainly makes it ambiguous. I also think that T.V. Guide holds enough weight to balance Lennon’s reference to him as being gay.

The fact that it came from The Advocate gives it less weight. Think for a moment: they’re discussing a character who is “ostensibly” (I think that that word sums up what all the reviews and insightful viewers of the show have arrived to) gay for a gay magazine.

So, to review: we can not describe a character clearly coded as gay, who displays an obvious attraction to other men, who participated in a gay marriage, whose creator explictly describes as gay because TV Guide said otherwise once. Gotcha.
