Look, I still like Star Wars just fine, even if it’s always been second place in my heart to good old classic Trek. I’ve seen the movies multiple times and even rank Revenge of the Sith above Return of the Jedi. Hell, I went through a long spell of reading the novels because sometimes, you need some junky pop entertainment that doesn’t tax your brain. I get why so many people love the mythology that Lucasfilm has created, even if the Imperial fetishism is a bit heavy. That’s why I thought the 3D map that Entertainment Weekly posted on their Popwatch blog was neat — it’s nice to see how all of these fake places relate to one another in a fake galaxy that’s been the setting for such a big chunk of America’s pop culture, you know?

So of course there’s a pissing match in the comments, like, immediately:

Seriously, Star Wars fans. Never change.

In advance, I am apologizing. Yes, here I am with yet another post about commenters over at Philly.com. You see, there have been severe cutbacks at Churchco Global Worldwide Entertainment Concerns, Ltd. (the parent company of Get Off the Internet) and I’m pretty much the only guy who comes into the office occasionally, to make sure the thieving bastards from the law office upstairs have not broken in to steal the copier and assorted office equipment. Add to this my rather limited skillset for covering these things, this is what you get. Also, it is free, so there you go.

Okay- unpleasantness out of the way. Philadelphia jazz vocalist S. Denise King is suing a local hospital, claiming that “shocking sensations” during an MRI scan in 2008 have left her without the ability to remember any new music. She is seeking $50 grand in damages. Something for the courts to decide, but that can take months or years! BORINNNNGGGGG. Let’s turn it over to the Court of Public Opinion!

Jerryk2b tries to start things off with a joke-

Is the attorney with the firm “How Dowe cheatem” or “Dowe Cheatem & Howe”?

So very, very close. This is the internet- surely, there must be someone out there waiting to help with this old chestnut?

Jerry…….that would be the lawfirm of “Dewey, Cheatem & Howe” Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk!

Pretty good, but that’s not “internet helping.”

jerryk2b – it’s “Dewey”, dummy.

There we go!

Her bookings must be down. She is losing her “short term memory”, but remembers every iota of information aboutthe MRI. Go figure. Just another attempt at a cheap payday.

I got’s me a case….typical

Huh- that’s not a direct quote from the story. I wonder why they wrote it like that?

Its gottsta be someones fault, certainly can’t be this Nubian goddess’s.

i love black people, show me the money.

See? Subtlety is for the weak!

This has “scam” written all over it.

Has anyone actually heard this singer perform? I have and, frankly, I can understand why she went to this length to gain some notoriety.

Singing the blues while eyeing the green. Shocking!

She needed the MRI to plan treatment after she ate a hand grenade.

Would the comments be different if it were Taylor Swift!

Maybe they told her it was an MRI but it was really electroshock therapy?

when sales go down lawsuits go up

theBIGKAT, yeah the comments would be different if the singer was someone famous like Taylor Swift or Beyonce. Nice bait though.

another Fat American

Sorry Kingsy, “Money For Nothing” has already been done by Dire Straits…

Case closed!

So- I get in this morning, fire up the ol’ Twitter-reading machine and there’s a post from Mr. Dan McQuade-

Philly.com: “Racoons and bats and other critters are on the loose!” First Philly.com commenter: “I hate black people!”

“Why,” I think to myself, “that can’t be right! Even over there, at Philly.com! Young Dan must certainly be engaging in some sort of wild hyperbole!”

Let’s just go over to the article and see!

Raccoons, bats, possums: It’s Critter City

ROBINSON STREET above Lansdowne Avenue, in Overbrook, is under siege.

Raccoons, among a burgeoning population of wildlife that infests much of the city, are so audacious on the street that they’re trying to get in people’s windows.

At least that’s the way it seems to worried residents.

How- HOW could anyone possibly be able to take that and turn it around into a racist comment? Let alone in the very first post?

Now, I’m not saying it can’t be done, but it would require such herculean racist internet commenting skill that it would be beyond even the reach of the a skilled Philly.com commenter- and this is a very capable bunch in that area, I can assure you!

Alright, let’s just see this supposed racist first comm-

gobirds556
at least these “pests” do not steal taxpayer money while supposedly heading a government agency. they do not kill each other over drugs or $5. all those scumbags should be euthanized. what do animals do other then just try to survive? Leave them alone.

Oh. Well. It would appear that I have underestimated the skills of Philly.com commenters. I offer my deepest apologies. I can assure you that it won’t happen again.

Also, bonus points for being both an Eagles fan and wanting to murder! Bravo, (I’m assuming) sir!

Ah, it’s that time of year, once again. The seasons change and state legislatures haggle and argue over budgets in their annual displays of brinksmanship, dealmaking and comical out-turned empty trouser pockets. In Pennsylvania, it’s a particularly fun spectator sport, but now the state Democratic party has come up with a way for the electorate to join in the fun, with YourPABudget.com!

Yes, anyone can go to the site and send in their sure-fire ideas for fixing every single one of the states budget problems, once-and-for-all. Thankfully, learning from the mistake of the GOP’s problems with the unmoderated americaspeakingout.com, the PA Dems are filtering out the (I am sure) very racist and angry rants.

That doesn’t mean that there aren’t some awfully good ideas in here, though.

“TAX THE PORN INDUSTRY” I”M SURE IT IS A BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY….

Even tho alot of people wouyld disagree ( consider that i dont not use !) but legaloze marajuana .Do you no what would happen? The entire world would be without a crisis. We would open doors for every thing and 1, with jobs BILLLLLLIONNNNSSSSSSSSSSSS of dollars upon BILLLLLLLLIONS of dollars . One day it will i guarenteeeee and o yea by the way beer has killed millions of americans in accidents, and make thier judging completely ruined has marijuana

And there we go.

A HOV lane on all major roadways would be a great start!

AGREED.

Wait, what? Oh, an HOV lane? Ah, never mind, then. Sorry. Carry on.

Please consider eliminating the gold PA emblem on all stationery. Blue ink is much cheaper.

QUIT BUILDING SOUND WALLS ALONG THE ROADS.

See, you’re not thinking that through. You had to yell that idea. Maybe you do need the- MAYBE YOU DO NEED THE SOUND WALLS, AFTER ALL, SIR.

Re-vamp the Penal system by cutting expenses for housing prisoners following the state of Arizona’s example:prisoners live outside in tents or huts rather than heated or air conditioned buildings. If it’s good enough for our service men and women, it’s good enough for the offenders of society.

Hold on, madam- are you implying that our men and women in uniform are similar to convicts? Well, I never!

Sabotage an oil rig and blame BP so they have to give us billions!

Tax every student who has access to busing and chooses not to use it $50 per school year Tax strips joints and their ilk

Thousands of people are on un-employment. Have the people who are on unemployment serve on jurys thereby eliminating the stipend paid to folks who have to take off from their jobs to perform jury duty.

When calling a state office, and you’re put on hold, is there music playing? Probably. And if it’s licensed, someone has to pay for that. I’m not sure if it’s a significant expense, but it’s an expense nonetheless.

I’m pretty sure that would just be someone’s Hall and Oates CD.

Make students pay for summer school if it is required. It is generally there own fault if it is required.

Custom Pro-Team License plates. You see them for many other things. A full set for each major city, Steelers, Penguins, Pirates, Eagle Flyers Phillies. Fans would pay a premium for these I know. There could be licensing issues with the NFL, NBA, etc.. But I am sure they would enjoy the extra profits too.

That’s right- make the Sixers count for something, at least!

I AM 77 YEARS OLD AND i SUGGEST THE ELDERY JOIN A UNION BECAUSE YOU PEOPLE IN hARRISBURG LISTEN TO UNION PEOPLE YOU PROMISED THE ELDERY PROPERTY TAX RELIEF FOR 50 YEARS AND IT DID NOT HAPPEN WHY NOT RAISE THE SALE TAX TO 7 PERCENT WITH ALL THE TAX GOING TO EDUCATION NOT DIVIDNG HALF FOR PITTSBURGH AND THE OTHER HALF FOR pHILA AREA AS YOU DO EVERY TIME TAKE CARE OF pITTS BURGH AND pHILA, THE DEVIL WITH THE REST OF THE STATE

SIR! HOLD ON- PENNDOT WILL BE INSTALLING YOUR SOUND WALL SOON.

MAKE SURE EVERY WELFARE RECIPIENT HAS ATTEMPTED MILITARY SERVICE FIRST. IF someone is going to receive welfare benefits, then we need to make sure they have exhausted all means of searching for a job. The military is the first place they should try. They should have to provide proof that they were rejected to receive their benefits.

If every entertainment related person (actors/actresses/producers, talk show hosts, etc) and way-overpaid sports figures were to donate $1 million each to the government, we would be out of debt over night.

Eliminate the MILLIONS of dollars spent on translating paper work for 20 different languages in PA. If you don’t speak ENGLISH, LEARN IT!! or find someone to translate for you. MILLIONS of dollars wasted each year on translating forms for welfare recipients because no enforcement is made to learn the language of this country. ENGLISH!!

There are a large number of people in PA who purchase alcohol, so I think we shoul d raise the taxes on alcohol substantially.

Have to say, I do not see a flaw with that person’s logic. It’s pretty airtight in the first sentence.

increase the tax on ammunition 50%, this may upset some hunters, but cut down on drive-bys.

Remove air conditioning and heating from the capitol. Legislature will only meet when really needed, reducing the time for mischief and forcing a Texas style legislation process.

I can only assume this somehow involves barbecue or executing someone. Either way, why not?

Increase taxes on the Country Clubs – if you can afford to join them – you can afford to pay higher taxes.

I’m guessing that, if you instead imposed a tax on crazy winner-take-all golf contests or yacht races between country club members (“snobs”) and caddies/kids staying in that dilapidated beach house (“slobs”), you would see a lot more revenue come in.

Tax 10% income tax for anyone who comes up with a new tax idea….

Hey, that seems like it might- OH, WHY YOU…

So, why not head over there today and give them your PA Budget idea?

Todd Alcott is a screenwriter, playwright and monologist who has been writing incisive film analyses online for a few years (Examples: his exhaustive film-by-film look at the work of the Coen Brothers or Venture Bros. episode breakdowns, to name but two of many). He approaches everything from the basic question, “What does the protagonist want?” which also is the subtitle of his recently-launched site. In the process, he’ll go through a film, finding things you had no idea were there, but once they’re pointed out, you can’t not see them.

Okay, there’s your background. Now- Heidi MacDonald, proprietor of comics web-log The Beat, asked Mr. Alcott if he’d apply his methods to comic book-based films from time to time. First one? Batman: The Movie, the 1966 film starring Adam West, based upon the television series. The piece is typical Alcott, which is a good thing, looking at the film from a story standpoint, pointing out what works and what doesn’t, what makes sense and what is ridiculous. But also, it’s a bit of a joke to devote an ostensibly serious analysis such a goofy, fun film like this, which is sort of the point. Some folks got it, but this being the comics internet and all, many nerds bristle at even the vaguest hint of not taking a film starring Caesar Romero as a clown villain with white grease paint over a mustache and a character named “Commodore Schmidlapp” with the utmost respect.

Do you seriously not understand how camp humor works? Or have never in your life seen The Batman TV show from the 60s? You are a complete idiot and I don’t understand why The Beat asked you to do a guest post when you employ the blandest analytical style possible and completely miss the point of what you’re looking at.

Although I wouldn’t level the charge of “idiot” as vlucca does,I would say “misguided” or “sloppy.” I’d have to agree with vlucca’s assessment that the writer is missing the point of the film, and by extension, the series…You cannot use a one size fits all critical method in which you treat “Batman: The Movie” as the same sort of text as “The Dark Knight.” In fact, most of this “analysis” practices the dreadful art of “reviewing.”

Anybody with half of the brain power of the 60s Bruce Wayne could have cobbled together such random obvious remarks about this movie, which doesn’t go into any detail at all about the 40s Batman movie serials which had clearly informed the camp humor on display here.

If you really want to analyze this film, try looking at it in the context of Hollywood in the mid-1960s, where the influence of French New Wave film making was changing the way movies were made. Look at it as a transgressive narrative, much the way Bonnie and Clyde was a transgressive narrative, in that it subverted public perception as to what a superhero movie “should” be. Argue the influence of Andy Warhol and the Pop Art movement on the look and style of the film, or look at it as pure political satire, in a day and age when authority was being held up to question and ridicule. All of these provide fertile ground for analysis. Simply recapping the film’s plot and making snide comments contributes nothing, and makes you appear as shallow and uneducated.

I have to think that this is the first time that the 1966 Batman has been associated with the French New Wave. If not, I have a hat nearby and some salt with which to eat it.

…a piece of film criticism needs to stand on it’s own– you need not read the backlog of writings by Anthony Lane, Pauline Kael or Jonathon Rosenbaum in order to “get” the critic. Film criticism is not like reading the collected works of a fiction writer– it needs to communicate directly to its audience a well-crafted set of rationalized positions regarding that film. Regardless of whether Mr. Alcott’s previous writings are “first-rate,” this, alas, is not. Additionally, this piece of writing qualifies as snarky, rather than campy. Camp is far more enjoyable.

And lord knows that, if there is one thing there is absolutely no room for in that part of the internet inhabited by comics nerds, it is “snark.” Also- this is a personal thing- can we please stop it with that word? Just for old Uncle RJ? I get the palpitations.

I’d fail my Junior and Senior level film students if they tried to hand this type of crap in as “analysis.”

Perhaps Mr. Alcott would be better served by calling his material “commentary.” The bar is set much lower in that regard.

Having read this “analysis,” it is easier to understand why so few interesting films ever get made any more. Has our modern understanding of the superhero become so cramped and reified that an intentional comedy has to delve into the murder of the protagonist’s parents to be enjoyable?

Hear! Hear! Batman has never been about some little kid who witnesses the violent murder of his parents, thus setting him on the path to actually become Batman.

The odd thing about all of this is the very obvious stretching some of these folks make to sound very intellectual and oh so serious while denouncing a dry tongue-in-cheek analysis of a goofy interpretation of a story about a fellow who dresses as a bat and punches crooks.

AND, LO, THERE WAS A GREAT CONVERGENCE.

The two most beloved topics here at the Get Off the Internet offices are the wild and crazy world of fandom and the violent and crazy world of internet news comments. For some time now, our researchers have been endeavoring to find a way to somehow combine the two. Then, suddenly, when no one was looking, it dropped right into our internet laps.

The NBC series Chuck has been struggling throughout much of its life. Once again being threatened with cancellation, its fans opted to hold a bunch of “flash mobs” across the country, which would somehow convince programming executives to spend millions of dollars on a show that has a niche audience at best. Four cities were chosen by the Chuck community- Chicago, Seattle, San Diego and [wait for it] Philadelphia.

NOW, as has been documented in these very pages, Philadelphia has had a, shall we say, difficult relationship with the concept of flash mobs of late. Where it conjures up large groups of hipsters, oh, I don’t know, shaking hands or something in other cities, here in Philadelphia, people associate the term with kids going nuts. So, when news of the Chuck event hit the political weblog of the Daily News (“The People Paper”), folks were a little uneasy.

Yeah, please, no more flash mobs. Will the show pay the legal costs for police if things get out of hand? Will they guarantee to foot the jail bill of anyone arrested?

“Out of hand.” People buying Subway sandwiches and dressing as employees of a fictional Best Buy knockoff. “Out of hand.”

Wow, anyone who flash mobs for another season of Chuck is an ultimate tool.

im starting a flash mob if there is another season of chuck

It’s YOUR city. Ruin it if you like. But when the city loses jobs and resources, (schools already suck!) look in the mirror before you rant!

Has anyone consulted The National Guard? As of yesterday mobs in this city have become so sophisticated that 4th and 5th graders are the targets of High School thugs with a baseball bat. It’s reported by the police there was only one bat but there’s some question as to whether it was wood or metal – what a relief!.

The National Guard. FOR FANS OF CHUCK.

Our prisons are full of “Chuck fans”. We should have “Chuck” banned from the airwaves.

These animals threw beer bottles at cop cars, turn cars over, beat up anybody walking by for no reason even old ladys and they have no respect for anything or anybody…anybody engaged in this type of behavior should be SHOT on sight..I bet ya flash mobs would cease to exists in a jippy.

Now, hold on. I don’t like Chuck, but shot on sight? Some of these people are forgetting the tragic and violent Sports Night riots of 2000, to our eternal national shame.

I kinda liked the idea of The Naked Bike Ride myself. The only thing more revealing than the event itself was the self-righteous outpouring of shock and dismay by the Puritanical, body-part loathers in the comments section here. Can’t somebody organize a Naked Flash Mob event, please?

Okay, dude, now you’re just being creepy. The comments section for the “Save Human Target” rallies are over there.

Fan fiction is a curious thing. On a podcast I host, we recently discussed it a bit and one of the panelists even related a story about the time he submitted an awful story based upon The Facts of Life to a site years ago and the rather earnest advice from the site’s editor. Yes, it was all kind of a joke, but these folks take it very seriously and seem to write these things for a few reasons-

1) Frustration that the creators of these characters “aren’t doing it right.”

2) Wanting to continue the adventures of, say, WKRP In Cincinnati, decades after the program’s cancellation.

3) Out of some odd sense of ownership/real affection for these fictional places and people.

It is this third one that we will concern ourselves with today. NewsRadio is one of the most underrated and underwatched sitcoms in recent history. It had a great ensemble cast, great characters and had no problem getting just flat-out bizarre at times. Watching it now, it seems a little improbable that it was on network television for five seasons [Note: The AV Club has a good collection of episode reviews and analyses. Also, Hulu has 60-odd episodes available for viewing online]. Now, a show as idiosyncratic as this, with a rather specific comedic voice, well- you’d think that any attempts by fans to try and capture that tone would seem a little, well, off. And guess what? You’d be very right.

Adventures at WNYX! » by Goldenrod Lockhart
Join the staff of WNYX as they go through chapters of misadventures you’d never see on the tv show.

Dave’s Final Goodbye by Frogorn
Dave passes on and everyone has to cope with their loss. Warning: This is just an oneshot, so it is short not really detailed in the whole grieving process. Please read & review!

But it is not all fun and games and hilarity and the like. No, there is also room for grieving. And where there is grieving, there is often poetry, as in this piece- dedicated not to the late Phil Hartman, but rather his character, Bill McNeil- titled simply, “Goodbye Bill.”

The wind blows in uneven gusts. It makes loud whirs as it hits against the window. Paper and other items left by the day’s travelers scoot along the sidewalk. People walk buily[sic] as if nothing were new. Children run down the sidewalk in a race on their way to school. Cars rush down the street; each on a separate destination. Everything is as it’s always been: normal. Life is as it always is in the City that Never Sleeps. All seems the same, but it isn’t.

I continue to stare out the window watching the world go by almost expecting something to change. Everything seems pointless at this time. Work seems trivial. Conversations seem superficial. What’s the point?

My friends try to reach me, but I dodge the subject. I just don’t know how to move on from here.

I’m constantly distracted. Everytime the door opens, I look up. I expect to see him. He’s going to show up any moment. That door will open and he’s going to enter, like always.

I’ve seen him around. He’s been on the street and in the coffee shop downstairs. I know I’ve seen or sensed him here; when I go to the coffee machine or to the break room. I feel like he’s right behind me.

He’s going to walk through that door. Then he will go to his desk and things will continue as normal.

I tell myself all of this and I really want to believe it, but I can’t. He is not going to show up. He’s not just late. I haven’t seen him on the street or at the coffee machine. He will never walk through that door again.

“P.S., the crow flies at midnight.”

Looking back upon my Get Off the Internet posts, it certainly seems as though a lot of them have to do with Philadelphia and postings upon Philly.com, the site for its two main newspapers. Why? Well, I live in the City of Brotherly Angry News Commenters and read that site every single day, so there you go.

The trouble with this is that I develop a bit of tunnel-vision- a touch of provinciality, if you will- in that I figure these commenters have the whole trade sewn up in being pretty awful. Why, you might as well just make up some sort of customized print of that classic “A New Yorker’s View of the World” cover and send it to me as a gift, crossing out “9th Ave” with a thick marker and writing in “Broad St.” However- for all such cases of myopia there is often a cure, a moment of clarity where the heavens open up and the bright light of truth comes shining through.

A CASE IN POINT. Not long ago, on this very site, I waded through comments on an Inquirer article about a recent spate of cases involving teens causing mayhem in this fine city’s downtown. In my hubris, I figured that was it. Philadelphia internet commenters had the last say. We could take all comers, holding our heads high. I was wrong.

My internet friends, what we all read that day was nothing. A mere child’s finger-painting compared to a Rembrandt. For you see, no matter where you go, no matter what racist armchair tough-guy nonsense you post, you will always be an amateur compared to the professionals at FreeRepublic.com. Yes, the Freepers picked up on the story after another incident this past weekend, showing everyone in the Philly.com comment section to be the pikers and frauds they truly know themselves to be in their darkest moments of self-reflection.

Starting strong on the very first post (!) with photos of Philadelphia’s African-American mayor and police commissioner to imply their involvement somehow, we jump to-

Philadelphia= the next Detroit

Okay- I know, you’re saying, “So what? We’ve seen that before.” But the simplicity! An equal sign! No wasted verbiage!

You are in a kind of latent Civil War and OBOman in the WH approves it.

Now it’s up to you to defend your freedom and core values by all means you have…

Keep your guns close! If there is no Police,no arrests,in these attacks let’s open the FIRE

This is a clinic, people. A clinic. Keep those notepads and pencils handy.

Grandma is losing her healthcare to pay for these thugs’ care….that’s what they call social justice.

Tying in to the health care reform legislation- masterful!

Take away their cell phones, and they would have to revert back to using drums.

Seriously. Are you taking notes? This is how it’s done.

It’s the stuff 12 gauge shotguns where made for.

Okay- that’s not misspelling. That is a tactic. This is by the book and a joy to watch.

There is terrific segregation in the media. Obama ran tons of hate-filled advertising on Black and Hispanic radio—remember the smear of Rush in the Spanish ad? Black radio spews out paranoia and hate like nothing that white people hear on the radio and TV.

I have been wondering what Obama is cooking up with the armed gangs (with TARP and Porkulus slush funds), totally under the radar. I think the Black Panther beatings of white people were a test run.

Conspiracy theories! Wonderful! You know what? I’m sorry- I’m just going to get out of the way now and let you enjoy-

Wasp spray if you cannot get pepper spray.

Or a large commercial pump up weed sprayer.

We all must be prepared for an eventuality of a mob, anywhere anytime against anyone.

You need an offensive weapon that won’t hurt you but buys you enough time to flee.

Vinegar is good against unshielded eyes. No permanent harm but terrible sting.

Okay, I’ve been abroad too long, and I haven’t heard this expression, “flash mob,” before. since I didn’t see anything in the article as to a ‘cause’ for this, I’m assuming at the moment that “flash mob” means they are are doing this with no reason necessary-—just to be abusive, injuroius, destructive, and in need of some hot lead.

Best bet is to learn how to use a carry knife that has the legal length blade in home state.

Why didn’t they take their licensed firearm and defend themselves?? In Texas we would have dropped at least a dozen or so.

Part of the plan.

THE PTB ARE ENGINEERING CHAOS IN OUR STREETS–DELIBERATELY.

They want anarchy and an excuse for more deaths and martial law.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

May God have mercy on all who Love Him in looming traumas.

Look, the black leadership in this country better get their heads out………..white people have guns, and we will gun down these idiots……..

The time draws near to completely drain the swamp…

Oh, I don’t know about that. Sometimes a small group of people can set thigns right- when they’re properly motivated.

They have DIVIDE AND CONQUER down to an art and a science.

. . . directed literally from hell.

I could wear this into the “mob”, and they wouldn’t know what it meant!

They’d think it was some sort of moon-man talk

I’m thinking that a book would repel them much like a crucifix to a vampire

They have a name for that kind of activity…beating up a lone white guy, usually a guy who wears glasses. I cannot remember it…I think they call it “Nedding” or something bizzare like that.

As far as shooting go’s. I’m basically ambidextrous.

This needs repeating:

“Deep rooted prejudices entertained by the whites; ten thousand reflections, by the blacks, of the injuries they have sustained; new provocations; the real distinction which nature has made; and many other circumstances will divide us into parties, and produce convulsions, which will probably never end but in the extermination of one or the other race.”

Thomas Jefferson

Wow, in my city the mayor is black. The police chief is black. The fire chief is black. The city manager is black. I’m seeing a pattern in cities.

It’s time to go after the editors of the MSM personally and replace the aging Communists with honest people.

If half of what actually goes on in this country is reported, the Dem party would cease to exist in four years, and the Communists would (literally) all have been fled or shot, despite their Ivy League degrees and connections.

Cheers!

Okay. Going to the gun store with the next paycheck. Carrying 24-7.

If it happens around me, there will be up to 16 mobbers proned out bleeding.

Welcome to Philazimbabwe.

Get into the back of the bus, Whitey.

A matter of fact, get your white a$$ off of the bus. Barry is in town. It is time for retribution. I see major issues in the near future. White guilt will loose the day.

White people need to wake up. There is an undeclared war on whites and Western Civilation. It will continue to happen and get worse, way worse, as long as whites continue to run away from race.

This is the training for the Administration’s jackbooted thugs. There arent going to be uniforms, it is going to be about being leftist thugs.

There are those who berate me for carrying several magazines full of ammunition at all times saying there’s no reason I’d ever need more than what is in the pistol.

Oh, is that a fact now?

This kind of rabid animal attack is growing and I will NOT be a victim or stand idly by while others are being attacked by packs of mindless beasts.

I wonder if someone that understands interlocking fire positions and how to use a twitter account, could conjure up their very own “flash riot” and direct it into any small pre-selected area of their chosing?

Alright. Philly.com commenters? You need to step up your game. You need to come correct. Seriously, these FreeRepublic people are making you look like chumps. Poltroons. Second-raters. But you know what? I think you can do it. You can come back, I have faith in you. I’ll be there, cheering you on from the sidelines, because I believe. Now, get out there, you crazy, kooky nuts, you. Maybe you’ll have one more chance with tomorrow’s stories.

NASA researchers, drilling hundreds of feet below the Antarctic ice shelf, have discovered a tiny, shrimp-like organism, alive and swimming, confounding some theories about what types of animals can survive at that depth and temperature. Surely, something like this should be a bit humbling, showing that we haven’t come close to understanding the natural and hidden wonders of our planet, let alone the universe. Also, it shows that scientific exploration, moving ever forward, can unlock the doors of knowledge, with each little discovery serving to enrich mankind as a whole.

The great thing about this age in which we live is that discoveries like this can now be shared immediately with untold scores of people, who can share in such wonders and make their opinions about them known to all. Oh wait- did I say “great thing?” Sorry, I meant “really, really awful thing.”

who cares? another worthless venture brought to you by nasa and the american tax payers…

What are the limits? That thing could carry a germ that could wipe us out…

Do the benefits of that kind of exploration outweigh the risk?

Are you kidding me? We are CLOSING PUBLIC SCOOLS accross the nation but our government pays for this Exploration in wasted time? Yeah I wonder why our country is in the state its in! Did these Scientits have a outback BBQ after ther discovery? So disapointed in my government.

Shouldn’t we be focused on fixing what is broken on the surface of this planet first?

NASA National Aeronautics and Space Administration. What are they doing in the ocean under the ice? Are they confused about what they exist for? or maybe they are just another out of control Federal Govenment spending apparatus trying to justify their existence? No wonder this country is broke going broker. Someone should call them up and tell them to knock it off.

The unfortunate thing is that that camera (probably -unless they performed the camera drop and drilling sterilely) now brings new bacteria, viruses and fungi that were not part of that environment into an environment that may be ill-equipped to deal with invasive species. That they were surprised suggests they may not have taken the appropriate caution not to mess with the environment the way the rest of mankind has been bringing in species into new environments and destroying the ecological balance previously in place (cane toads into australia as an example of purposeful introduction, or zebra mussels into the great lakes as an accidental one, small pox into the new world accidental then used maliciously on the North American indians. )

Now how is this find going to help the economy and the starving children?

OK, So whats the National Aeronautics and Space Administration doing under the ice
in Antarctica ?? Could it have anything to do with Washington’s fraudulent global
warming agenda ?

Only God can create this creature, stop trying to think with science. It doesn’t make sense.

There it was just swimming along minding it’s own business and it get plucked out of it’s home and ends up on top of the ice with God knows how many idiots with glasses and pocket protectors (under thier parkas) staring down at it with their mouths open watching WHILE IT DIES !!!
What a life altering discovery. Now the hundreds of thousands of starving people or those dying from horrible diseases can rest easy!
Science has prevailed.

I always thought NASA was just about Space, now at least I know where my tax payer dollars are going to find a new shrimp cocktail , dont worry about AIDS cures or feeding the third world this is far more important.

It was probably an imperfection on the expensive camera we taxpayers footed the bill for and NASA called it a shrimp?!

Great. Now we can spend millions of dollars to search frozen moons for shrimp. Think about that next time you see a telethon.

I THINK THAT IT’S GREAT THAT WE HAVE DISCOVERED A NEW LIFE FORM ON OUR PLANET.LET’S LEAVE IT ALONE.BECAUSE IT MAY BE DEADLY TO SOME OF THESE SO CALLED HUMANS.ON SECOND THOUGHT?????

Bubba Gump already called out “ice shelf shrimp” in the movie… n-ice try NASA

Maybe if they didn’t drill so many holes in the ice it would slow down the melting of the ice caps?

Nasa spends money on this and the census B spends millions on advertising to send in your Census???? We got a letter (and so did you) just to tell us that the Census B is sending the Census!?!?! wonder what the cost of sending every American a letter telling them they are going to get a letter was?

So you are saying that “science” was wrong about where life can live. Is there a possibility that “science” is wrong about the causes of climate change? Tell me it ain’t so!

Though, to be fair, the article is a bit shy on some details (why is the research being done? was anything else found?) and there are a good number of responses also upholding the importance of scientific exploration. However, we don’t want those people to Get Off The Internet. Just the dumb ones.
