The seasons change and state legislatures haggle and argue over budgets in their annual displays of brinksmanship, dealmaking and comical out-turned empty trouser pockets. In Pennsylvania, it’s a particularly fun spectator sport, but now the state Democratic party has come up with a way for the electorate to join in the fun, with YourPABudget.com!

Yes, anyone can go to the site and send in their sure-fire ideas for fixing every single one of the states budget problems, once-and-for-all. Thankfully, learning from the mistake of the GOP’s problems with the unmoderated  americaspeakingout.com, the PA Dems are filtering out the (I am sure) very racist and angry rants.

That doesn’t mean that there aren’t some awfully good ideas in here, though.

Thousands of people are on un-employment. Have the people who are on unemployment serve on jurys thereby eliminating the stipend paid to folks who have to take off from their jobs to perform jury duty.

When calling a state office, and you’re put on hold, is there music playing? Probably. And if it’s licensed, someone has to pay for that. I’m not sure if it’s a significant expense, but it’s an expense nonetheless.

Make students pay for summer school if it is required. It is generally there own fault if it is required.

MAKE SURE EVERY WELFARE RECIPIENT HAS ATTEMPTED MILITARY SERVICE FIRST. There are a large number of people in PA who purchase alcohol, so I think we shoul d raise the taxes on alcohol substantially.

Remove air conditioning and heating from the capitol. Legislature will only meet when really needed, reducing the time for mischief and forcing a Texas style legislation process.

I can only assume this somehow involves barbecue or executing someone. Either way, why not?

Increase taxes on the Country Clubs – if you can afford to join them – you can afford to pay higher taxes.

I’m guessing that, if you instead imposed a tax on crazy winner-take-all golf contests or yacht races between country club members (“snobs”) and caddies/kids staying in that dilapidated beach house (“slobs”), you would see a lot more revenue come in.

Tax 10% income tax for anyone who comes up with a new tax idea….

Looking back upon my Get Off the Internet posts, it certainly seems as though a lot of them have to do with Philadelphia and postings upon Philly.com, the site for its two main newspapers. Why? Well, I live in the City of Brotherly Angry News Commenters and read that site every single day, so there you go.

The trouble with this is that I develop a bit of tunnel-vision- a touch of provinciality, if you will- in that I figure these commenters have the whole trade sewn up in being pretty awful. Why, you might as well just make up some sort of customized print of that classic “A New Yorker’s View of the World” cover and send it to me as a gift, crossing out “9th Ave” with a thick marker and writing in “Broad St.” However- for all such cases of myopia there is often a cure, a moment of clarity where the heavens open up and the bright light of truth comes shining through.

A CASE IN POINT. Not long ago, on this very site, I waded through comments on an Inquirer article about a recent spate of cases involving teens causing mayhem in this fine city’s downtown. In my hubris, I figured that was it. Philadelphia internet commenters had the last say. We could take all comers, holding our heads high. I was wrong.

My internet friends, what we all read that day was nothing. A mere child’s finger-painting compared to a Rembrandt. For you see, no matter where you go, no matter what racist armchair tough-guy nonsense you post, you will always be an amateur compared to the professionals at FreeRepublic.com. Yes, the Freepers picked up on the story after another incident this past weekend, showing everyone in the Philly.com comment section to be the pikers and frauds they truly know themselves to be in their darkest moments of self-reflection.

Starting strong on the very first post (!) with photos of Philadelphia’s African-American mayor and police commissioner to imply their involvement somehow, we jump to-

Okay- I know, you’re saying, “So what? We’ve seen that before.” But the simplicity! An equal sign! No wasted verbiage!

No matter how much people may pine for the “good old days,” the truth is that politics have always been rather ugly. But underneath a great deal of it, certain things were off limits for most people, regardless of party. In Rick Perlstein’s book Nixonland, a sea change is identified, wherein divisions between political ideologies in the 60s and 70s were driven even deeper for short term gain by a certain party in America’s wonderfully diverse two-party system. A strong case could be made that these divisions have borne the fruit of reasoned political discourse in the form of today’s Rush Limbaughs, Glenn Becks and the whimsical Tea Party Movement.

Today’s angry man-on-the-street conservatives have been told over and over again that they have a lot to be angry about- assailed on all sides by political correctness; a president who is just waiting for the right time to throw them into Marxist gulags; police around the corner waiting to take their precious guns; and, currently, a bunch of socialists in Congress ready to come into their houses and make them stop paying a lot of money to health insurance companies.

A wonderful gathering place for these folks is the venerable FreeRepublic.com. Last evening, when I read of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D. Nev.) wife and daughter being hurt in an awful automobile accident, I figured that the “Freepers” would surely be able to put aside partisan rancor and have nothing but good wishes for the Reid family. I mean, there are just some things that transcend politics, right?

That is sad. Prayers for the family.

See, there we go. No matter one’s political beliefs, it is important to-

you do not want my opinion on this one. Right now…..I am a target of Reid……dont ask for my opinion on his family.

Oh, screw it. Let’s just get this over with.

Recently, Politico writer Ben Smith posted about the efforts of freshman Congressperson Bill Posey (R-FL) to amend the Federal Election Campaign act so that all candidates for President must provide a birth certificate in order to run. I have absolutely no idea what kind of point Posey is trying to make, but then again, I don’t have trouble understanding the difference between a “birth certificate” and a “certification of live birth.”

Let’s see how Posey’s intended audience reacted to Smith’s post:

There is nothing I learned in Medical School or in my training as a Flight Surgeon that can fix this; save the absolute power of Truth. The POTUS must stop concealing the documents once and for all and the issue of his qualifications must be addressed. Make no mistake; any adverse consequences to the troops as a result of your failure to act responsibly will be in large part directly on your head. Have you considered the legal ramifications for our fighting forces if for any reason the POTUS is not qualified. Are they in Iraq illegally? If so, does this make them terrorists under International law as the Islamic radical elements have been calling them? Have they given up their Geneva protections and do not even know this? If so, when captured can they be killed or tortured without International legal ramifications? Have they been stripped of the legal protections by the Soldiers and Sailors Civil Relief act? Are you willing to allow this risk to them when they are fighting for us? Once again I find myself at a loss of words to try to explain the abject and total dismay I have at the administration, to include the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, to allow the painful division now occurring in our military to proceed unabated. I hope that I do not need to remind you that you as well took an Oath to support and defend the Constitution. As a point of honor you are either willing to do this or you are not. If you are not, then preserve your honor, resign and let someone who cares more about us than that do what is right. I again respectfully implore you to act within your powers and help us. Is it safe to plant food on the White House lawn? My guess is they’ve been using chemicals for decades on it. How much poison is in the soil that the plants will uptake? Will Sasha and Malia be poisoned by food from the White House garden? Stay tuned.

It’s hard to pass up the comments on the web-version of a newspaper, USA Today, that so embodies “lowest common denominator” that its print version is delivered daily to hotel room doors around the country. But when that article is about President-Elect Obama being featured in a Spider-Man comic, the comments are just too hilarious to pass up.

Comments seem to fall into a few different categories: Bush-bashing, reverse Bush-bashing/liberal baiting, pedantry, and insanity. But as you’ll see, there are quite a few that fit into the other categories that also fit into insanity.

If I was currently serving my country, be it in Iraq, Afghanistan, or
in any station, my course of action may do both myself and Obama a
favor: I would resign my commission (if an officer) or ask for a
discharge (honorable–if enlisted), effective on the date of
inaguration. I am extremely proud to be an American and would be proud
to serve her (if I were still doing so), but I would not serve Obama.
An Obama presidency is anti-American and not worth serving. Besides,
since he wants to withdraw troops from Iraq en masse, I would be one

McCain/Palin lost because of the media and nothing else. He was
fighting all the bias that tv news, magazines, and newspapers threw at
them. It was never the experienced leader against a black man, it was

It is no suprise that Castro is happy for us (as has been reported

Time for the 3rd party candidates to back McCain for the good of the country. I’m writing down the names of all the creeps that let us down this year to pass on to the next generation since they’ll just change the history books for them.

It’s always refreshing when a white commenter such as Sue recognizes racial oppression when she sees it:
