And this story from Washington about a lost toddler who survived a night outdoors thanks to his cuddly puppy keeping him warm is a real winner.

You get a special kind of politician in different parts of the country. In California, you tend to get ex-actors. In Texas you get people like Betty Brown, who recently suggested that, well…I’ll let her explain:

When is someone going to pass a law that protects me??

The New Hampshire House recently passed a law banning discrimination on the basis of gender identity. Pretty straight-forward law, on the face, especially since all it allows for is people flining complaints with the state Human Righs Commission when they feel they have been discriminated against on the basis of their actual or perceived gender identity.

Of course, we wouldn’t even be bringing it up here unless there were people who were really freaked out by the idea of transgender people having rights, too:

There should be 3 types of bathrooms…Men’s room, Women’s room and Gender confused room. I mean what’s the difference between letting a man in the women’s room or letting a gay woman in?

Just remember, if this passes, if there’s a middle-aged man in a dress following your little girl into the ladies’ room to try to watch her use the potty, you can’t say anything, or that’s a Hate Crime.

If you voted for Democrats, this is what you get.

I don’t know whether to feel relieved or not that the “they’re all pedophiles” meme is moving on from gay men to transgender women.

Sexual predators use EVERY ADVANTAGE THEY CAN and I know it is not fair to my gay lesbian and transgendered friends and I feel badly but hey its the law I will live by it as they should understand the fear that us moms face as it is with bathrooms.

Give financial support to groups organizing against this absurd “nondiscrimination” legislation which actually discriminates against heterosexuals. Or you are going to be living in Sodom and Gomorrah formerly called New Hampshire and the United States of America. Give up a days work before you workplace, neighborhood, town, state is unfit for regular folk to live here.

A young man in Portland went to a late showing of Watchmen Sunday night and, about halfway through the film, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. A horrible tragedy, one which will be treated with the utmost delicacy and respect by the readers at KTMR.com, of course.

So sad, now he will never know how the movie ends.

Oh, never mind. Let’s get this over with-

Fourth months into Obama’s administration and there are no more people who have died in mass murder-suicides than any other President within an 8 year period. You’ll be seeing a lot more stories like this.

Huh. This turned ugly quick. I feel bad for the kid. But really it was a crappy anti american, and anti religious movie. It tried very hard to be deep but in the end it seemed like endless complaining , with a hopelessness that really was unecessary. In my opinion of course. I like movies that promote strength instead of despair.

Generally, I’ve found that the people who didn’t like this movie weren’t smart enough to follow its storyline. (This statement is in no way a comment on the tragedy which is the subject of this news story.)

I didn’t think the movie Watchmen was that bad. Now if it had been a Michael Moore movie I could understand somebody shooting them self, just to end the pain of having to sit through the whole movie..

Midwest24, stories like Watchmen are cautionary tales. They detail possible negative societal developments in order that they they can be better understood and avoided. Throughout history, cautionary tales have played an important role, George Orwell’s “1984″ being a prime example.

I want to applaud this young man. FINALLY we hear about a psycopath who actually has a set. Here lately these nut cases seem to go in and kill a dozen people before they do what they actually came to do; kill themselves. At least this kid was not a coward. He reversed the order and killed himself first. If you want to take your own life I really could care less. But please do it before you consider taking any innocent life. I promise, I will blog and chat about what a hero you are.

Okay – is there anything that isn’t some horrible discussion/riff on the film’s quality or mocking the deceased?

Ron Morris devoted a recent column in “The State” (Yes, I’m disappointed to learn that it had nothing to do with the comedy troupe as well) to the issue of South Carolina’s flag, and how it costs the state money. Namely, because the NCAA will not schedule a tournament there.

It’s an interesting article, as it strips the issue of the chimeras of “heritage” or “racism” and boils it down to the purely economic effects of having a state flag that many people in the rest of the country find offensive.

Let’s look at some of the rational and reasoned responses to the article:

As for the flag, it is off the statehouse and hanging at a memorial. As soon as SC succumbs to the demands of this bigoted NAACP and removes the flag to the museum THEN they will begin the harassment of making us take the memorials down as well. I guess in its place will be yet another MLK statue, after of course the city is strongarmed into renaming Gervais MLK Blvd. Here is what I have to say. NAACP AND BLACK PEOPLE MOVE ON TO MORE IMPORTANT THINGS THAT WILLWILLWILLWILL ADVANCE YOUR PEOPLE…as in N__A__A__C__P and forgot about a danged flag that hangs on a memorial. Ron Morris, please hurry up and get your pink slip like so many papers are giving out these days. Funny how you leftwing nut jobs blame the papers decline on anything except the fact that you are all whacko hacks, non mainstream and write with agendas instead of JUST THE FACTS PLEASE.

It is displayed at a MEMORIAL for God’s sake. A tribute to the thousands of South Carolinians that died in that war. It is not a %$%#^# symbol for segments of society to get their panties in a wad. If the next “offensive” thing becomes the Bible are you going to relegate that to museums also?

This state has many problems but the flag is not the issue. Why concentrate on the flag??? Take that time and work on the teen pregnacy, the sorry education system, and the high crime rate. Of course any symbol of resistance to government is anathema to this mob. Well, the Confederates of South Carolina set an example of valor, determination and patriotism which we find very little of in these terrible times, and the last refuge of loyalty to the Founders’ original intent is the conservatives of the South. We only hate those who use their freedom to deprive others of theirs.

With that: Will the NCAA now refuse to allow events in states that permit THIRD-TERM ABORTIONS? Because I think any fair-minded American (a majority) agrees (especially if they know the process involved in a third-term abortion) that it is much more grotesque than a piece of cloth hanging on a pole.

And if I find third-term abortion offensive, based on moral reasons, why shouldn’t Ron and the NCAA promote my opinion for me and the majority of Americans who agree w/ me?

Thank goodness I don’t rely on tourists for income. They treat us southerners as if we are so beneath them…..especially those from the northeastern states. It was big news, as it always seem to be, when the Iowa Supreme Court quite sensibly declared that the state’s ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional.

I’m sure you know where we’re going with the rest of this post:

How many judges agreed in the unanimous opinion?

Uhm…all of them?

Where are they polygamists, polyandrists etc, isn’t banning that then also unconstitutional? The ones who should be celebrating are the divorce lawyers. I suggest that heterosexual marriages get fixed before rushing into handling unconventional/alternative marriages.

Yes, that’s right, equal rights for gays is just part of a sinister plot by divorce attorneys to get rich.

God has nothing to do with this.

This is a sad day. Hopefully the people of Iowa will take back their state from the vermin in black robes who think the traditional family is obsolete. The legislators in Iowa need to remove those justices who found that homosexual marriage is equivalent to heterosexual marriage. It is not, and never has been, and never will be.

Homosexual marriage is also a threat to the traditional family. It makes a mockery of the institution, which has been the bedrock of all civilization since the beginning of time. It is a sure sign of America’s decadence that gay marriage is being legalized by unelected judges.

What a lousy ruling. By the logic of the Iowa supreme court, equal protection must mean that men and women are interchangeable. By that logic, any law that has a gender specific provision (such as maternity leave) is a violation of equal protection.

Well, yes. Which is why most responsible businesses and states allow men to take “paternity” leave.

There are absolutely no grounds for considering homosexual unions to be in any way similar or even remotely analogous to God’s plan for marriage and family. Marriage is holy, while homosexual acts go against the natural moral law. Homosexual acts close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity.

If you think that, you’re doing it wrong, honey.

Please explain where in the constitution it deals with gay marriage. This was not a problem then and as such was not mentioned in the document. some judges are making thier own interpatation of the constitution. They should read it as written.

All great societies destroy themselves. America is hedonistic and self centered without concern for the real problems this country faces. Sounds like the fall of Rome.

Yes, it is your choice but it goes against our Creator and even crosses the laws of nature.

Just another activist court legislating from the bench. Where are the strict contructionists when you need them? Am I the only one still fuming about Brown v. Board of Education?

I am sickened by the positive response to this (but I guess I didn’t expect anything other than that). We have taken a holy union created by God and smeared it in the dirt by allowing this. i am personally shocked at the unanimous decision by the supreme court. They ought to know that Homosexual marriage is not about the discrimination or hatred to homosexual, but it is stopping the moral dilemma. Those who support homosexual are also supporting promiscuous sexual activity and free love. When the train of our moral rights will be stop falling? How long do we have to wait to see us in Soddom and Gomorrah.During the baby boomers, it was okay to have intercourse with those who you love,today it is okay to have love with same sex.What our next generation will fall into? Polygomy? If our generation supports this kind act, the next generation will be is far worser shape. I do not hate homosexuals, infect I believe they are very good and cordial people. However, people are good & evil and no one knows what will happen when our morality as culture is free falling, which is evil. Those judges are people who only look at one side of opinion and do not look at the other (such as the case in the abortion). They are exact type of people who only look at the law on a base of circumstance.

His headline? With Byko-inspired plan, ‘nerds’ are now envied VIPs.

Anyhow, it’s a worthwhile plan and a good idea. Though Bykofsky’s insistence at still calling these kids nerds is a little odd, good for him for putting this out there and for the city for implementing it. I mean, rewarding kids who are doing well is a good thing, right? Well, we’ll see- let’s go to the Philly.com comments. Mr. Squirrelpants? You’re up first-

why are we rewarding kids for being nerds? maybe we can start paying them to sit in their mom’s basements playing videogames, too.

It is a bad idea to reward someone for doing what they are supposed to be doing in the first place. Whatb this does is teach people to look for more handouts as they get older.

what about students in catholic/private high schools? they’re parents are paying taxes too (probably more than public high school parents). meanwhile, their schools SAVE tax dollars – why aren’t they being awarded for their academic achievements? not to mention the fact that they’re saving the city money, unlike the public school students.

This is a joke. Yeah, way to be racist and prejudiced! Every “bottom dwelling” high schooler is a problem child ON PURPOSE. Right. Many of these kids are in trouble for a reason. Bad parents. Bad influences. poor neighborhoods. yeah, let’s ignore them, and only help those who don’t need help. Way to go Stu you should be so proud. Perfect attendance? Give me a break. Attendance means SQUAT. Half the courses at schools are a waste. And the BRAINY kids that LOVE school don’t need more handouts. This is pathetic.

Great idea to reward high achievers. It’s pretty stupid to reward perfect attendance, though – it means the kid probably came to school when he was at a high risk of transmitting an illness at some point. If too many kids get straight A’s, the reward should go to the upperclassmen. It would certainly be better to give all 600 varsity letters though.

Take, for example, this story from ynet news in Israel, about a gay couple who, after fostering a child thrown out by his family for being gay, were finally, after fourteen years of court petitions, allowed to adopt the boy, now a grown man.

I am shocked at reading this. What about the Mitzvot against such unions let alone adoption by such? This hypocrasy will destroy Israel! Haven’t we learned this over the centuries? I must convert to Judaism because my mother wasn’t pure enough according to Israeli standards, but an openly homosexual couple, expressly forbidden by Torah, is allowed to flourish within the boundaries of Israel and adopt.

I am not voicing a condemnation of any Jew. I let G-d make those choices. The blatant disregard for the instruction from G-d made public only shames good observant Jews and brings about condemnation from G-d for such an open violation of Torah. I am not advocating discipline or old Temple justice, but a recognition of this evil for what it is and a censure of such an openly public view. Please consider during this celebration of Purim, that G-d saved us to live as prescribed, not to violate the basic standards of Judaism. I celebrate the salvation of Judaism and you report the destruction of it.

In Philadelphia this week, a woman’s purse was stolen. Two Boston salesmen making a call at a nearby hair salon thought a moment, then gave chase. A couple of blocks down, a guy saw the thief run past, called 911 and joined the chase. The thief dropped the purse, the victim got her purse back, people’s faith in humanity and strangers in general was renewed. A nice, feel-good story, right? Let’s go to the Philly.com comments!

“The Gallery is just a huge toilet.”

The Gallery at Market East in Philadelphia’s Center City is an odd piece of urban design. Built in the late 1970s to compete with shoppers and stores flocking to the city’s suburbs, it sits on East Market Street with its bare concrete walls facing the street, taking up several blocks between the heart of the city’s downtown and one of the country’s most important historic sites, Independence Hall.

Here’s the thing though- it does rather well. It was constructed on a vital rail transit hub, connects to the convention center, vacancy rates are typically low and the profits are amongst the highest for its management company’s shopping centers. It may be a poorly-designed piece of the urban fabric, but it serves its purpose- it’s a place to shop that lots of people use.

Many in Philadelphia, however, do not see it that way, as an article in the Daily News points out. Of course, the attendant comments section is cram-packed with the type of intelligent discourse that’s the hallmark of Philly.com commenters.

A big part of the problem is that there are virtually no stores that attact an upscale shopper. K-mart, gamestop, and payless do nothing to draw the shoppers who frequent the numerous stores on chesnut and walnut street. Even a target or a best buy would do a lot to improve the shopping there. Its a fair point that the subterranean atmosphere of the Gallery hurts it. Most of the store entrances don’t really give a sense of whats inside. There are too many blank walls and wide open escalator banks, limiting store space. Too much closes early, making it more difficult to accomplish its goal of having city workers shop before getting on the train.

Okay, nice- thinking about it from somewhat of a planning perspective. Maybe this won’t be so bad, after-

Alright, then. See if you can read through there and count how many times “urban” is used as a code word for another word that is in these folks’ heads, hm?

When I moved to CC in ’79 I found the Gallery depressing and dirty. Now, I am older and fearful of the youth crowds and lack of perceived security presence. I live 5 blocs away and wouldn’t shop there if it was the last place on earth. And, now with the Internet, I can get anything I need online with a delivery charge that is often less than the cab ride to the Gallery and that means Macy’s too. I do, however, still shop and eat at the Reading Terminal Market.

The gallery is your typical ‘urban’ mall. Nothing but baby clothes and sneaker stores!

Just let the cops put a few beatings on the teenagers, who should be in school,loitering down there. A few broken facial bones will set them straight. Police brutality…. WORKS!!!!

I can sort of imagine the PSA with that tagline from the early 80s.

Take the subway to gamble and leave (supposedly) with winnings in your pocket. I hope they’ll be handing out signs for people to wear coming and going: PLEASE MUG ME!

Oh- did I mention that there are plans to maybe turn part of it into a slots casino? Well, there are.

What is so funny is the people who agree here as to what the problem is tend to vote for the same people that the parent(s) of these thugs vote for. WAKE UP will you!!!!!!

What this article is trying to say is that the Gallery has too many young Black ghetto people that shop there. Lets not pretend that Phila isn’t segregated along class and racial lines. ‘Certain’ people only shop and live in ‘certain’ areas. End of story. I don’t like shopping in malls at all. With the Gallery none of the stores attract me, parking sucks, and I can’t stand teenagers (of any race).

The Gal-ree is the laughing stock of all the “malls” within 25 miles of it. Can it even be considered a mall? It’s a shame that people walking through there from the regional rails have to witness the decadence and despair of the people that populate that area. From the crack-moms to the homeless to the downright nutty. After experiencing that kind of sadness who in their right mind would want to spend their money there? Nobody wants to shop there for fear of getting mugged. Really, the only people not afraid to shop there are people who are used to being in a “dangerous” area.

I have to say- the only reason I’m able to shop at the Gallery is because of my years on the mean streets of Webberville, Michigan.  Also- “downright nutty?” That makes me think of Thorny, the neighbor on Ozzie and Harriet.

Philly has to become more like NYC, where shops are privately owned and operated. The experiment of having government owned properties provide stores and shopping to the masses is too Soviet to be workable.

Brief aside: The city’s Redevelopment Authority (RDA) owns the property, which is then leased to a management company who oversees the mall. Very Soviet. What with the large private real estate developer running the thing and all.

The city of Philly tried to be a shopping mall provider using CC to service the inner city, but the RDA as owner of all this property like the Gallery is not practical. The RDA simply has shops and stalls that cater to the lowest common denominator, creating a creepy vibe like t-shirt stalls where you can get a death memoriam t-shirt airbrushed, aka “RIP RASHEED.”

No, the NBA rescinded those last two technicals. He’s fine.

the only problem with wiping out the gallery is where will all those sorry people go if there’s nothing there? that’s right, the real malls.

Dun-Dun-DUNNNNN.

Let’s end on a positive note, though. RowingMan seems to have his hand up. Perhaps he has a suggestion about how the retail mix at the mall could be diversified, or perhaps some sort of plan to rebuild the building’s facade to open it up a bit more, or maybe he’s been reading up on Jane Jacobs and her theories about continuity of the street-

There was a women who shot up the Delco Springfield Mall with multiple weapons in the mid 80′s. If she’s still around, why don’t we let her out (of prison) and she can patrol the Gallery – it’s gotta work better than today’s situation.
