Cracked.com is the sort of obsessive-compulsive’s version of The Onion, with lots of lists that are supremely easy to submit to Digg and Stumbleupon that alternate wildly between “very funny” and “dear god, shoot everyone that signed off on this.” Being a fan of hyperviolent shoot-em-ups films, I was very interested to read their list of 5 Kick-Ass Action Movies That Are Pure Propaganda and while the writing was sharp (frequently finding very leftist messages in films that purport to have AMERICA! FUCK YEAH! at the core), the comments were a minefield of idiocy and spam. Here’s the single best one, which made my jaw actually drop from the stupidity on display:

Yes, that spectacular action movie, Fahrenheit 9/11. I understand that over 2700 people died making that movie, that’s how realistic it was.

Sure, we all liked the Hitchcock riff that was Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder in Silver Streak.

We may have even sat through the entirety of James Cameron’s bloated Titanic.

But I think we can all agree that $50 for a pair of VHS cassettes you could get at Goodwill for $2.00 is a bit stupid.

In case you’re not sick of hearing about it by now, the web-site Stuff White People Like (though, really, it should probably be named Stuff Upper Middle Class College Educated White Liberals Who Live on the East Coast Like) frequently features down-right cringe-inducing stereotypes. And yet, the comments are usually worse…Take a recent post about how white people like having gay friends…(that sound you hear is every gay man in America laughing derisively at this notion):

I am not homophobic by any means, I just don’t have enough in common with gay people develop a friendship. You take it up the ass. I don’t. End of story.

Dudes don’t like being hit on by other dudes. OK, I realize turning a straight boy is the ultimate gay fantasy, but back the hell off. Also, there is no such thing as bi-curiosity with dudes. You don’t get to try dick. Once you’ve had one in your mouth, your gay. It’s OK for chicks, though.

Any red blooded white American male would want nothing to do with a male gay friend. Fuck that! It’s ok for women to have gay shopping buddies, but the day that I legitmize myself by having a fag friend is the day I run head first into traffic.

One of the great screwings in the history of the comic book industry is that of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the creators of Superman. Selling their creation for a pittance in 1938, the two lived in near-poverty for decades while watching their brainchild rake in millions for the publisher, DC Comics. It wasn’t until the late ’70s, when the big-budget Superman movie was about to be released, that DC, afraid of a public backlash against the film if it were found out how Superman’s creators had been treated, finally was shamed into paying both Siegel and Shuster a yearly sum.

Recently, after many a hearing and court session, the copyright to the very first Superman story in Action Comics #1 was awarded to Siegel’s surviving family, which will likely lead to even more money going in the direction of the creator, or at least his estate. This is a Good Thing, another step in redressing the treatment of the men who essentially created the modern comic book industry.

Of course, some fans think otherwise. Like this fella:

…Oh boy. Another disaster brought on by Siegel heir greed. The last money grab they pulled off resulted in Superboy getting axed, now I can see DC panicking and start monkeying around with the Big Red S to change him enough so that he’s no longer anything that resembles Superman.

Enough is enough. Get a judge in on this mess that understands a) copyright law, and b) the fans are more important than a couple of greedy grandkids!

And there are a few folks in this comics blog discussion who also believe those two guys got more than enough from their creation, and should certainly not have been concerned about providing for their families:

They shouldnt even get royalties they gave up that when they signed over the rights.

THEY SIGNED THE RIGHTS AWAY NOT WITH A GUN TO THEIR HEAD AND NOT ONCE BUT TWICE WHEN THEY SETTLED IN COURT IN 1948. ENOUGH ALREADY.

Gimme a break. They were paid in 1938. They were paid off in 1968. Again in 1978. They kept taking the money and suing again, Time Warner will keep this tied up for decades and that’s good.

As the end consumers.. we will be the ones paying for this. Keep this in mind next time comics prices rise, or your favorite book gets cancelled because it’s not selling well enough (less profit = less flexibility), or when they decide that making a Superman Movie or cartoon is not financially viable because of ‘licensing’ fees.

We mentioned Fanboys and its attendant controversy a few weeks ago on this site. The film’s second director, Steve Brill, took it upon himself to respond to messages from those fans who are concerned with how the director of Heavyweights is going to crap on their dreams for a sensitive, uplifting movie about a Star Wars fan dying of cancer. One fan wrote in this eloquent, forthright plea for the director:

You’re involved with Fanboys for nothing more than a quick buck. You don’t give a damn about the movie, Star Wars or its fans, so why the fuck did you agree to the job? Do you sleep comfortably at night knowing that you’ve bastardised a film that has the potential to become a cult classic for years on end into a movie which will be forgotten about in less than 6 weeks.

Little Nicky was okay, the rest sucked.

Once more, fuck you!

Brill’s response is a riposte in the vein of Oscar Wilde, the sort of thing that you’ll have on your mind late at night, marveling at its innate beauty:

I understand that homosexuality is not a choice, but what bothers me is transgender people who try and claim that what they did to their bodies wasn’t a choice they made, and therefore we shouldn’t judge them by it. Discriminating based on what somebody is is a terrible thing, but discriminating based on choices people make is completely fair territory.

And it’s because of people like you that we can’t get anti-discrimination laws passed…

On Celebrity Babies there is part of the interview from People magazine posted and she says that she isn’t breastfeeding because her mother didn’t breastfeed. Then in the comments there are a bunch of people saying good for her for admitting she didn’t want to do it. The most brilliant comment is the one that says that if you are going to breastfeed you should do it because you enjoy it. Yeah, I know that is my reasoning in all my parenting decisions. How about breastfeeding because it’s best for the baby? Nah, too selfless.

Even if she doesn’t want to she could easily hire a wet nurse or buy BM.

You read my mind. She can hire me to wet nurse lol. At least she was honest. However, my parents made poor choices, that doesn’t mean I have to do the same. ETA: I’m just thinking about all the women who’d love to nurse but can’t or have great difficulty with it b/c they have to work. There Jennifer is, with all the money in the world doesn’t have to work another day in her life and won’t even give it a shot.

So maybe I should only change DS’s diapers if I enjoy it, huh? Then again, changing diapers “just isn’t for me,” so maybe I won’t. Unless there’s a real barrier to BF’ing, I just have a hard time seeing it as optional.

So who is going to write to People about this? Fine, she chose to FF, but what it ridiculous about her comment was “best for them”. that is the most asinine reason I have ever heard for not ffing. why doesn’t she just say she doesn’t want to use her breasts? or that she can’t stand the thought of it? or some other real reason. not because its best for *them*. its best for *HER*. duh. that needs to be clarified in a letter to People. and I think I am too annoyed to write it.

op: the studies actually indicate that preemies have a deficiency of melatonin that persists much longer than it would for a full term baby. it’s not to drug the baby just so that the parent can get some sleep. it’s to correct a deficiency under medical supervision so that the db can continue to develop normally. the medical studies also associate a lack of regular sleep in dbs with learning disabilities later on. this is not witch-doctory or me just being lazy. i’ have a genuine concern with the health of my child and have researched it and spoken with medical professionals. i just wanted to know if others had used it and what their experiences were. why is that so bad??
